How vehicle sales tax works

When you buy a vehicle through a private party sale, most states require you to pay sales tax when you register the vehicle at your local DMV. The tax is typically calculated on the purchase price, though some states use the vehicle's book value if it is higher than the stated price.

Five states have no state-level sales tax on vehicle purchases: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Delaware charges a 4.25% document fee, and some Alaska municipalities charge local sales tax.
