Snowmobile Title Transfer — Complete Guide for All 50 States

Snowmobile title transfers differ from car titles in two important ways: the agency is often a natural resources department rather than the DMV (Minnesota and Wisconsin use the DNR), and some states do not issue snowmobile titles at all. Select your state for a complete guide.

Which Agency Handles Snowmobile Titles?

The most common snowmobile title mistake is going to the wrong agency. In Minnesota and Wisconsin, snowmobiles are handled entirely by the DNR — the DMV cannot process your title.

Motor Vehicle Agency (DMV/SOS)
MI, NY, CO and others
Snowmobiles processed like cars. Same forms and offices used for car titles handle snowmobile titles.
Natural Resources / DNR
MN, WI, and others
State DNR or Parks & Wildlife department handles all snowmobile titles and registrations. Do NOT go to the DMV in these states.
Registration Only (No Title)
VT and select others
No title issued. DMV registration certificate + bill of sale together prove ownership. Common in smaller snowmobile populations.

Vintage Snowmobile Age Exemptions

Many states exempt older snowmobiles from title requirements. Registration is typically still required even if a title is not.

StatePre-Year CutoffNote
MinnesotaPre-1980Registration still required; title optional for vintage sleds.
WisconsinPre-1971Model year 1971 and earlier exempt from WI title requirement.
CaliforniaPre-1972CA non-resident historical vehicle exemption may apply.
ColoradoPre-1973CO title requirement may not apply to very early sleds.
